Step Inside Kanazawa’s Living Geisha and Ryokan Culture

Spend a night at Kinjohro, a renowned ryokan and historic ryotei (traditional high-end Japanese restaurant) in Kanazawa, that embodies the city’s rich traditions.

Unlike other Japanese establishment, it offers completely private rooms, where quiet spaces and discreet service create a more personal way to dine. An experience elevated by the presence of the owner and Kanazawa’s Geisha (called Geigi).

You will be treated to captivating performances by Geigi, Geiko, and Jikata (a Geisha who specializes in singing and playing musical instruments), all while immersing yourself in the delectable flavors of seasonal Kaga kaiseki.

Then slip into the ryokan’s intimate private onsen and enjoy the spectacular views of the garden that tell the story of Japan’s changing seasons.

Kanazawa, the Ryotei & the Geisha Tradition

Kanazawa

One of Japan’s best-preserved castle cities, Kanazawa has nurtured its geisha districts and culinary culture undisturbed for centuries — one of the few places outside Kyoto where this evening is still possible.

The Ryokan

Founded in 1890, a long-established ryokan and ryotei in one, representing Kanazawa, the city of arts, culture and crafts. The riverside setting, cypress onsen, and garden views are not the backdrop — they are the experience.

The Geisha Tradition

Kanazawa’s Geigi perform alongside Geiko and Jikata musicians in a tradition passed down without interruption. What you witness here is not a recreation. It is the living thing itself.

Why Wanotabi

This is not an experience you can book at a hotel desk. Wanotabi’s relationships with Kinjohro and Kanazawa’s geisha community are built over years — allowing us to arrange access, context, and intimacy that no group tour can offer. Every detail is handled before you arrive.
