Step into the captivating world of sumo wrestling with an exclusive private viewing of a Sumo training session.
This is an intimate encounter with the “heart and soul” of Sumo, Japan’s national sport, which lies in its deep connection to ancient Shinto rituals, and reflects core Japanese values like discipline, hierarchy, and respect for tradition.
Enter a sumo stable, or beya, and enjoy an insider’s look at the rigorous morning training, asageiko, to witness active rikishi (Sumo wrestlers) into training rituals and techniques. This rare opportunity brings you up close to sumo wrestlers as they push their limits in a display of strength, skill and discipline.
Schedule: December-February, April-June, August-October. There is no public training session during odd months, which are dedicated to national tournaments (January, March, May, July, September, November).
A sumo stable — beya — is not a gym. It is a closed, hierarchical world governed by centuries of Shinto ritual and discipline, where rikishi live, train, and eat together under the stable master’s authority. Outsiders are rarely admitted.
Asageiko — morning training — begins before dawn and runs for several hours. What you witness is not a performance: it is the wrestlers’ daily preparation for competition, raw and unfiltered, conducted as it has been for centuries.
Every movement in sumo carries meaning — the salt thrown to purify the dohyo, the shiko leg raises, the stare-down before a bout. Your interpreter ensures nothing is lost, and the stable master’s presence makes the experience as rare as it is intimate.
Most sumo stable visits place multiple groups in the same session. With Wanotabi, the stable is reserved exclusively for you — no other visitors, no shared access. Just your group, the wrestlers, and the stable master.
