Meet the Shokunin of the Hokuriku Region

The Hokuriku region is a land filled with cultural charm. Excellent cuisine, pristine landscape, more snowfall than almost anywhere else in the world and a remarkably vibrant and varied artisan tradition (“Shokunin” in Japanese).

Stretching from Niigata to Fukui, through Toyama, the Echizen-Ecchu-Echigo Takumi Kaido, is known as the Takumi Kaido Master Artisans Road (“Takumi” means Master Artisan). And Master Craftsmen renowned for their high-quality, long-lasting products can be found along the routes that connect these areas.

Join your private expert guide and discover the best of Japanese artisan work, including knives (Echizen and Sanjo), Takaoka copperware, washi paper, bamboo crafts, lacquerware, or Sabae, the mecca of glasses.

Experience luxurious accommodations with soothing onsen and exquisite regional cuisine, embodying the stories the Hokuriku region has to tell.

Meet The Master Craftsmen

The Takumi Kaido

Stretching across Niigata, Toyama, and Fukui, the Artisan Highway connects communities whose craft traditions — knives, copperware, washi, lacquerware, bamboo, eyewear — have survived intact for centuries.

The Crafts

You will not observe from a distance. Wanotabi arranges direct access to the workshops — time with the artisans themselves, demonstrations of technique, and the opportunity to understand what separates a Shokunin’s work from everything else.

The Ryokan

Each night is spent at a hand-selected luxury ryokan in the heart of the region — where the local cuisine, onsen, and snow country landscapes complete what the workshops begin.

Why Wanotabi

The Shokunin do not advertise. Many workshops are closed to casual visitors, and introductions must be arranged in advance. Wanotabi’s knowledge of the Hokuriku region and its artisan communities ensures you meet the right people, in the right places, without the barriers a traveller would face alone.
