Prepare for an unparalleled journey into the very heart of Japan’s denim heritage.
While Okayama is the “birthplace of made-in-Japan jeans” and home to many famous brands (Momotaro, …), Fukuyama (Hiroshima) is a quieter, but equally vital, force in the industry. With Onomichi to the west and the Seto Inland Sea to the south, the region was known for Bingo Kasuri, a dyed cotton fabric, before transitioning to denim production after World War II.
Dive into the world of bespoke tailoring, choose from a range of selvedge denim fabrics and craft your dream pair of jeans with passionate experts. They will be here to guide you through each step of the process, from fabric selection to the final touch-up.
You will also experience the beautiful natural landscape and food of Setouchi with a stay in a traditional Japanese houses, which redefines the ryokan experience by blending contemporary elegance with centuries-old traditions.
While Okayama claims the birthplace of Japanese denim, Fukuyama is its quiet powerhouse — rooted in the pre-war Bingo Kasuri cotton weaving tradition and home to selvedge artisans whose work rivals any in the world.
Over 3–4 days, you select your selvedge fabric, choose your fit, and work directly alongside the artisans — stitching, dyeing, and finishing a pair of jeans built entirely around you. Nothing is pre-made. Nothing is rushed.
Between atelier sessions, you stay at Azumi Setoda — a converted historic merchant house on the Seto Inland Sea, where the pace slows and the region’s food and landscape become part of the experience.
Fukuyama’s finest denim ateliers do not offer public workshops. These are working studios — access is by arrangement only. Wanotabi’s relationships with the artisans make the experience possible, and ensure your time with them is unhurried and entirely private.
