The Mitsui Kyoto

Built on a centuries-old site that once housed the Mitsui family residence, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto blends serene Japanese minimalism with contemporary design that reflects the storied heritage of its location. The 160-room property sits across from the 17th century Nijo Castle and is within easy walking distance of Kyoto’s historic temples, tranquil gardens and lively dining streets.

The 160 rooms, designed by Fu, are as serene as the site is historic: abstract water motifs and swathes of birch wood sit alongside touches of Kyoto craftsmanship—perhaps a wabi-sabi bowl, or a pot of moss. Some have views of Nijo Castle; others overlook the garden or the Kyoto skyline. Hardcore onsen lovers will also be in heaven—there are two sleek Onsen Suites for overnight stays with private baths.

The hotel’s French restaurant TOKI is led by chef Tetsuya Asano, his impressive culinary background includes having been the first Japanese chef to become the Sous Chef at the Ritz Paris in 2017. He also served as the Executive Chef at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant L’Espadon.
